Bill's Day Trip to Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa has long been one of Sri Lanka's most popular beach spots. It is located 98 km south of Colombo, the capital. The train ride was just over two hours via the 'express' train, which only stopped at a handful of stations along the way. The town is located on the Indian ocean and the highway runs directly through the center of the town, which makes shopping a semi-dangerous endeavor! There are a number of hotels and guesthouses and some fabulous restaurants.

Scuba diving is very popular in Hikkaduwa.

Grilled prawns (shrimp), mashed potatoes and a cold Lion lager!

The trains are a great way to see the country.

My train arrive in Hikkaduwa at approximately 1:00pm. The return 'express' left at 4:00pm, leaving me time for a delicious lunch and a couple hours for wandering through town. The cost for the southbound trip from Colombo was 180 Rupees (approx. $1.65US). Very affordable!

Red Cross Reunion

On January 7th we met up with some Red Cross alums.

We met at a fabulous Chinese restaurant on the beach at Mount Lavinia.
